'Soon come' time in Jamaica

Saturday, May 20, 2006

If you have decided to visit my fair island of Jamaica then there are a few things you should know about how we see time. One of the most common phrases you will likely here is 'soon come'. Now this somewhat vague term can mean you have a five minute wait or 20 minute delay. It really depends on the person and how busy it is at the time you visit.
It will undoubtedly make your experience a bit more pleasant if you know what may be in store for you. If you are used to a more regimented, or 'almost on the dot' type of timing in your country, be prepared to wait a bit to get what you want and plan ahead for any short delays. We in Jamaica tend to see time as more relaxing. Don't get me wrong, we do believe in schedules and timeliness but lets just say it's far more relaxed than other parts of the world.
Now if you plan on traveling to our beautiful island in the near future, be prepared to adjust a little to the way we do things. Most Jamaicans appreciate that you are visiting and are used to doing things differently. We will try to make it a 'no problem' vacation for you but you never know what the day will be like. So when you come down, prepare to relax Jamaican style...warm sun, the sea lapping at your feet, cool evening breezes, a nice cold drink, and the perfect sunset to end the perfect day.
